El golpe militar que pavimentó el camino de la milicia chilena al poder político en 1973 marcó el comienzo de una dictadura que se cierne sobre la historia reciente de Chile. Su análisis es un proceso continuo al cual los cineastas también han contribuido abriendo el espacio a discusiones sobre la verdadera naturaleza del régimen dictatorial. Este artículo se centra en cómo estas películas han relatado esta historia y en cómo y por qué han usado imágenes reales de archivo de la época y con qué efecto. Examinaremos películas chilenas recientes sobre la dictadura y atenderemos la manera en que las imágenes reales de archivo y el relato de la historia se interconectan para brindar nuevas perspectivas sobre un capítulo específico de la historia contemporánea.
The military coup which paved the Chilean military’s way to political power in 1973 marked the beginning of a dictatorship that looms large in recent Chilean history. Its analysis is an ongoing process to which filmmakers also have contributed as they have opened the floor for discussions on the true nature of dictatorial rule. How these movies have told this history, how and why they have used authentic media images of the time, and to which effect, will be at the center of this article. We will examine recent Chilean movies on the dictatorship and call attention to the way in which media images and history telling interconnect to render new insights into one specific chapter of contemporary history.
