The objective of this work is to analyze how representations have been built around female madness in the hospital of la Salpêtrière between 1870-1893 and its relationship with emotions within the framework of the theory of “affective turn”. Taking as a working hypothesis that the affective turn can be used to reinterpret the construction of female madness in the context of the studies of Jean-Martin Charcot in the Salpêtrière, challenging the traditional view that emotions are synonymous with the absence of reason and allowing a deeper understanding of the role of emotions in the experience of women affected by madness. The thesis is structured in four chapters which initially contextualize the study of female madness in the Salpêtrière, then analyze the representations and treatments within the framework of Charcot’s studies, and finally interpret these findings in the light of the affective turn. The methodology employed is qualitative in nature and is structured into two levels of work: an exegetical and a hermeneutic, dialectically related. As for the technique of data collection, it consists in the documentary analysis of the selected bibliography, that is to say, in the reading and classification of existing and available documents around the subject addressed.
