En este ensayo se exploran las obras de Carlos Fuentes “La gata de mi madre”, “La buena compañía” y “Calixta Brand” a partir de las cuales se discute el uso de la imaginería gótica como espacio de reflexión sobre la realidad latinoamericana postcolonial, la preservación y supresión de la memoria y cómo esta relación se articula a través de las casas, el lenguaje, los espejos, los fantasmas y los ángeles, símbolos que se convierten en metáforas del espacio cultural del continente, la identidad y los abusos de poder. El eje conductor del ensayo será el lugar simbólico de la casa a partir de las idea de Bachelard y Freud para explorar el significado y las metáforas de los fantasmas que pueblan los cuentos de Fuentes y la relación que se genera entre dichas metáforas, el uso del gótico y el rol social de la literatura.
In this study I explore the works of Carlos Fuentes "La gata de mi madre", "La buena compañía" and "Calixta Brand." I will discuss the use of Gothic imagery as a space for reflection on Latin American postcolonial reality, the preservation and suppression of memory and how this relationship is articulated through images such as houses, language, mirrors, ghosts and angels, symbols that become metaphors of the cultural space of the continent, its identity struggles, and abuses of power. The thread that ties this essay is the symbolic place of the house, based on Bachelard’s and Freud’s ideas, in order to explore the meaning and metaphors of the ghosts that haunt these stories and the relationship that develops between these metaphors, the use of Gothic elements and the social role of literature.
