| dc.description | En las elecciones generales de 1938 se presentaron, en representación de los principales partidos políticos del Uruguay, dos arquitectos para competir por el cargo de Presidente de la República. Similar situación sucedía para el cargo de Intendente de Montevideo. El general y arquitecto Alfredo Baldomir y el arquitecto Horacio Acosta y Lara asumieron entonces, y respectivamente, los dos cargos ejecutivos más importantes del país. Además, otros arquitectos ocuparían cargos ministeriales y en otras instituciones del Estado. Este artículo examina la trayectoria de estos arquitectos y la de otros colegas contemporáneos para evidenciar la existencia, más que de una sumatoria de individualidades, de una generación de arquitectos que, incluso luego de fundar las instituciones arquitectónicas –fundamentalmente la Sociedad de Arquitectos y la Facultad de Arquitectura–, se manifestó altamente comprometida con la tarea de dirigir los destinos de la nación. Su particular visión del progreso y de los cometidos que el arte y la arquitectura debían asumir los llevó, además de a ejercer una enérgica participación en el ámbito gremial y la dirección académica de la Facultad, a ocupar diversos lugares de la administración estatal, más allá del campo de incidencia relativo a las obras arquitectónicas o los planes urbanos. | es |
| dc.description | In the general elections of 1938 two architects competed for the Presidency of the Republic representing the main political parties in Uruguay. Something similar happened with the position of Mayor of Montevideo. The General and Architect Alfredo Baldomir and the Architect Horacio Acosta and Lara, respectively, assumed the two most important executive positions of the country. At the same time, other architects would occupy posts in ministries and in other State institutions. This article examines their career and that of other contemporary colleagues to demonstrate the existence, rather than a sum of individualities, of a generation of architects who, having founded the architectural institutions –fundamentally the Architects Society and the Faculty of Architecture–, was highly committed to the task of directing the destiny of the nation. Their particular vision of progress and the goals that art and architecture had to assume led them to occupy various places in the State administration, beyond the scope of architectural works or urban plans and, in addition, to exert an energetic participation in the guild and the Faculty academic direction. | es |
