This article discusses the importance of analysing the ideas about translation and interpretation, both at an individual and social level, in order to frame this analysis within the academic field and to make a contribution – especially regarding translators and interpreters’ training – towards an integral professionalisation that facilitates and improves everyday professional and expert practice. In addition, some issues linking translation and society, translation and science, translation and social representations are introduced, as well as notions about translatology as an interdiscipline and a field of study, with different present-day theoretical lines. Keywords: translation – translatology – theorisation – professional expertise
