En el marco de la lucha reciente por el derecho
al aborto en Argentina, en un sector del movimiento de mujeres surgió con vigor la consigna de la “separación de la Iglesia y el Estado”.
Esta reivindicación liberal elemental, formulada
en el siglo XXI, estimula la reflexión sobre los
alcances de la secularización en las sociedades
modernas y sobre las relaciones entre las esferas
política y religiosa.
A raíz de esto, el presente artículo recupera el
legado teórico de Max Weber, que no solo hizo
del proceso universal de racionalización su
problema de investigación privilegiado, sino
que abordó con detenimiento las categorías de
Estado e Iglesia y el vínculo recíproco que estas instituciones entablan históricamente. En ese
sentido, el artículo se propone: 1) examinar el
modo en que Weber construye sus definiciones
de estos dos conceptos sociológicos y puntualiza
sus afinidades; 2) identificar las relaciones típico-ideales más importantes que advierte entre
ambas instituciones en el mundo pre-moderno;
y 3) caracterizar la separación de la Iglesia y el
Estado en la modernidad y las limitaciones que
encuentra en este terreno.
In the context of the recent struggle for the right to abortion in Argentina, the slogan of “separation of Church and State” emerged strongly within a sector of the women’s movement. This elementary liberal demand, formulated in the twenty-first century, stimulates reflection on the scope of secularization in modern societies and on the relations between the political and religious spheres. As a result, this article recovers the theoretical legacy of Max Weber, who not only made the universal process of rationalization his privileged research problem, but also carefully approached the categories of State and Church and the link that these institutions stablished historically. In that sense, the paper aims to: 1) examine the way in which Weber constructs his definitions of these two sociological concepts, specifying their affinities; 2) identify the most important typicalideal relationships that he sees between the two institutions in the pre-modern world; and 3) characterize the separation of Church and State in modernity and the limitations that he finds in this area.
