Abstract: Dionysus and his retinue were often depicted on the pottery used in the Greek symposium. Within Dionysian iconography, we are concerned with the return of Hephaestus to Olympus, an episode that is known more from artistic representations than from literary references. The François vase provides us with one of the oldest and most elaborate versions, which includes the god of metallurgy riding an ithyphallic donkey and a boisterous procession of satyrs and nymphs. Later versions expand the erotic component (Krater, Lydos, Met. 31.11.11), the debauchery (Cup, Oakeshott's Painter, Met. 17.230.5) and, in some case, sexual aggression (Hydria, Vienna ANSA IV 3577).
