Item Open Access Challenges and Specificities of Battlefield Archaeology in Argentina: The Case of Cepeda Battlefield, 1859(Conference Proceedings: Fields Of Conflict, 2016) Leoni, Juan Bautista; Martínez, Lucas H.; Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland; Trinity Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies; University of YorkThe battle of Cepeda, 1859, was one of the high points in the crucial confrontation between the Argentine Confederation and the then rebellious Buenos Aires Province, which shaped the process of modern nation state building. Whereas the confederate army commanded by president Justo J. Urquiza defeated the provincial army led by Bartolomé Mitre, this victory would not be decisive and more fighting would follow until Buenos Aires’ definitive triumph in 1861. The battle has only been studied by historians, using the contradictory commanders’ battle reports. This paper presents the archaeological research on the battlefield. We discuss methods, finds, and interpretations, but also use this case study to address three major issues that differentiate this battlefield study from contemporary European and North American cases: 1) Heterodox battle tactics, which combined Napoleonic style tactics for infantry and artillery, with a locally developed emphasis on irregular and light cavalry; 2) A lack of written sources on both weapons employed and specific details of the battle; 3) Landscape transformations that significantly altered the original battle ground. As a whole, these issues - a widespread occurrence in Argentine XIXst century battles - challenge the development of battlefield studies and pose limitations to its interpretive potential.Item Open Access Frontier Warfare in the Argentine Pampas From An Archaeological Perspective: Late XIXth Century Military Sites in Carlos Casares County, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina(10th Biennial International Conference Fields of Conflict, 2018-09) Leoni, Juan Bautista; Tamburini, Diana Sandra; Acedo, Teresa R.; Scarafia, Graciela; Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research CenterThroughout the XIXth century, a process of territorial expansion developed in what is now Argentina. Initiated under the Spanish rule, it deepened after independence in 1816. It sought to incorporate extensive tracts of land in the region known as the Pampas, vast treeless plains with a temperate climate. These lands were favorable for cattle raising and agriculture and thus indispensable for an economy oriented toward the export of primary commodities. This expansion, however, was an uneven process, heavily dependent on the political and economic consolidation of the Argentine society, and especially on the building of a modern nation-state, which only began after 1861. Thus, the final accomplishment of this territorial goal could only be completed after a massive military campaign in 1879.Item Open Access Batalla de Pavón (1861) Y Fortín Loma Negra: Análisis comparativo de dos contextos militares del siglo XIX. Un aporte desde la Arqueología(2020) Abatangelo, FrancoEl presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo el análisis comparativo del registro material de dos contextos militares de mediados de siglo XIX, con la intención de diferenciar el registro material de un asentamiento militar (Fortín Loma Negra) y un campo de batalla (Batalla de Pavón 1861). El Fortín o Cantón Loma Negra adquirió gran relevancia durante la década de 1850, cuando funcionó tanto de base de operaciones para la defensa de la Frontera Norte de Buenos Aires contra las incursiones indígenas, así también como zona de concentración y entrenamiento de tropas previo a las batallas cruciales de Cepeda (1859) y Pavón (1861) entre Buenos Aires y la Confederación. Esta última, presenta el punto culmine y fin de una década de enfrentamientos armados, donde se disputaban dos proyectos de nación contrapuestos. Como hipótesis se sostuvo que el registro arqueológico debería presentar cierta uniformidad (al tratarse ambos casos de contextos militares de mediados de siglo XIX), como también una diferenciación en cuanto a los materiales y su dispersión, permitiendo de esta forma caracterizar un contexto pasivo (Fortín Loma Negra) y un contexto activo (Batalla de Pavón).La metodología empleada constó de prospecciones superficiales, mediante transectas y detectores de metales y el análisis en laboratorio de los elementos recuperados. Como resultados preliminares se puede observar una diferencia entre el registro material de cada sitio, encontrando en el caso del Fortín Loma Negra restos de gres, cerámica, y botellas, asociado a un contexto militar pasivo, registro que hasta el momento no se ha encontrado entre los restos materiales de la Batalla de Pavón. Por otra parte, en el campo de batalla, se observa un registro vinculado estrechamente al combate militar, tal es el caso de estopines empleados por el cuerpo de artillería para la detonación de cañones. Los resultados preliminares obtenidos hasta el momento, permitirían confirmar la hipótesis antes planteada. El trabajo aquí expuesto se enmarca en los proyectos “Arqueología histórica de la campaña de Pavón, 1861” y “Arqueología histórica de la guerras entre Buenos Aires y la Confederación Argentina, 1852-1861: Sitios militares en los partidos de Rojas y Colón (Prov. de Buenos Aires)” dirigidos por Dr, Juan B Leoni y codirigido por Lic. Diana S Tamburini.
