In 2014, a group of students of the School of Languages, National University of Córdoba, guided by their teachers, took part in a project which involved children who spend time in the play centres of the local hospital while they wait to be called by their doctors. This project consisted in reading aloud stories for children so as to encourage their participation in activities which helped them to have a better relation with peers and society in general, while learning and having fun. The objectives of this project were: (i) to encourage our students and the kid participants to read for pleasure and to get involved in activities related to reading, (ii) to provide a place where patients feel supported and entertained and at the same time they learn, (iii) to contribute to students’ integral development raising their awareness about issues in the real world and about community work. In this paper, first the theoretical framework upon which this project was based is detailed; then, the different stages when preparing and putting the project into practice are described and analised.
