Una modalidad de lectura de las Dissertationes de Epicteto consiste en leerlas a la luz de dos argumentos centrales alrededor de los cuales se articulan las reflexiones del autor, a saber, el Argumento Teleológico y el Argumento Eudaimonista. Sugeriré en este trabajo que aun cuando la tensión entre las conclusiones de ambos argumentos quizás no pueda ser resuelta satisfactoriamente desde el punto de vista teórico, la comprensión de la posición de Epicteto ante la Retórica puede contribuir a comprender cuál de los dos extremos de la polaridad el autor considera como prioritario.
A plausible interpretation of Epictetus’ Discourses entails their reading in the light of two central arguments around which the author’s reflection are organized, namely the Teleological Argument and the Eudaimonist Argument. In this paper, I suggest that even if the tension between the conclusions of both arguments may not be solved from a theoretical perspective, the understanding of Epictetus’ viewpoint on Rhetoric may help understand the author’s preference for one of the poles over the other
