En este trabajo se repasa el surgimiento y desarrollo del campo disciplinar de la arqueología de campos de batalla. Se mencionan las objeciones y desinterés iniciales que impidieron su desarrollo y se presenta brevemente la investigación arqueológica de la batalla de Little Big Horn (1876), caso de estudio fundante y paradigmático de este tipo de estudios. El resto del trabajo se enfoca en el estudio arqueológico, actualmente en curso, de la segunda batalla de Cepeda (1859). Se discuten los objetivos y las distintas líneas de investigación en desarrollo. Se presentan también algunos resultados parciales obtenidos hasta el momento, que permiten visualizar el potencial de este tipo de investigaciones para profundizar el conocimiento de un crucial evento de la historia de nuestro país.
In this paper, I review the origin and development of the field of battlefield archaeology. The initial objections and disinterest that prevented its earlier development are pointed out. The archaeological research of the Little Big Horn (1876) battlefield is briefly presented, as it constitutes a seminal and paradigmatic study case in the field. The rest of the paper focuses on the archaeological study, currently in progress, of the second battle of Cepeda (1859). Its objectives and different lines of research are discussed. Preliminary and partial results are presented as well, which contribute to visualize the potential of this study to deepen existing knowledge of a crucial event in national history.
