La emergencia de nuevos polos de poder mundial implica la resistencia natural de EE.UU. al ver sus intereses amenazados por modificaciones en el statu quo internacional. En un contexto donde China se predispone a desempeñar un rol más activo dentro del sistema internacional, Donald Trump llegó a la presidencia con lemas como “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” (que América vuelva a ser grande) y “AMERICA FIRST” (América primero) que, en parte, incluyen redefinir la relación bilateral con determinados actores internacionales, entre los cuales está el gigante asiático.
