Este estudio realiza una consideración sobre la importancia social y el rol que la guerra tuvo en las sociedades del Cercano Oriente antiguo desde los tiempos más antiguos. Existen evidencias visuales y textuales que describen, conmemoran y narran los eventos bélicos desde el IV milenio a.C. pero la naturaleza de esos documentos ha sido sobreestimada y malinterpretada. El estudio se inicia con una definición de “cultura de la guerra” e intenta señalar cómo la guerra estaba socialmente imbricada como una operación política y cultural por sobre y más allá de los límites de las interpretaciones ideológicas y propagandísticas que han siso sugeridas en el pasado.
This study takes into consideration the social importance and role war and warfare had in the ancient societies of the Near East from the most ancient times. Images and texts describing, commemorating and narrating war events are documented from the IV millennium BC, but the nature of those documents has been sometimes overlooked and misunderstood. Starting from the definition of “culture of war”, the contribution seeks to point out how war was socially embedded as a political and cultural operation above and beyond the limits of the ideological and propagandistic interpretations that have been suggested in the past.
