This paper analyzes the symbolic role of cattle in connection with leadership and social differentiation in present Nilotic communities –the Nuer, Dinka and Atuot societies- as well as in ancient ones, especially the Nubian “A-Group” and Egyptian groups located in the Nile Valley during 3500 – 2800 BC. The analysis is made through the concepts of substrate –which is important to make this kind of comparisons- and aesthetics -which helps us to interpret the perception that each society has of the world surrounding it.
