Possibly, it is due to the numerous complexities of the cuneiform writing system that Assyriologists and scholars have traditionally suggested that the use of writing was solely reserved for an elite of specialists: the scribes who were the only ones capable of dealing with the cuneiform script for which they had to go through a long and tough training. In 2000, Claus Wilke’s work Wer las und schrieb in Babylonien und Assyrien set a break in the course of these matters. His theory posed that the knowledge of writing was not only confined to the scribal elite but that it was also used by men and women from the social elite. From that moment onwards, other scholars continued with the task of bringing into question the traditional assumptions and outlining alternatives. The aim of this paper is to track the path from the traditional to the updated theories after a brief and general approach to the question of the origins of writing and of the cuneiform script.
