El punto de partida es el reconocimiento de un fenómeno que afecta a la comprensión y el desarrollo de los también llamados derechos colectivos: la creación y funcionamiento de las Juntas de Buen Gobierno y los Caracoles, dos instituciones fundadas por el Movimiento Zapatista para aplicar, de forma unilateral y autónoma, los derechos demandados a y negados por la arena política oficial de México. El artículo se divide en cuatro secciones. En la primera sección, se analizan, desde una visión de proceso político, las movilizaciones que defienden los derechos indígenas en América Latina. En la segunda sección, se revisan los principales instrumentos jurídicos internacionales que han servido de base legal a las demandas indígenas. La tercera sección examina el significado de la autonomía. La cuarta sección entra de lleno a examinar el estudio de caso, es decir, la lucha del Movimiento Zapatista por la autonomía indígena. The point of departure is acknowledging a phenomenon that influences on the understanding and development of the so-called collective rights: the creation and functioning of the Committees of Good Government and the Caracoles; the two institutions founded by the Zapatista movement in order to apply, in a unilateral and autonomous form, the demanded rights denied by the official political class of México. This piece of work is divided into four sections: firstly, it analyzes the indigenous movements of human rights in Latin America. Secondly, it examines the most important international laws regarding the indigenous people. Thirdly, it explains what can be identified as autonomy. Fourthly, it studies the Zapatista Movement and its dispute for the indigenous autonomy.
