Não foi sempre assim. Os estudos sobre a sociedade já se debruçaram sobre questões que hoje são ignoradas ou, mesmo, tidas como preconceituosas. Por exemplo, a frenologia, estudo de como o clima e a geografia influenciam na personalidade do homem e se esboçam nos seus traços físicos, se apresenta totalmente racista. Já a vestimenta, mesmo não tendo tido um juízo de valor negativo, passou à insignificância. Para costumbristas, ou seja, estudiosos dos costumes e da exterioridade do ser, o modo de falar, andar, vestir-se, trata-se de uma questão imprescindível para o desenvolvimento de uma sociedade.
