Durante los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la Guerra Fría, como parte de las campañas reeleccionistas del dictador, los derechos políticos de las mujeres dominicanas se convierten en arma de propaganda para impartir un falso barniz de democracia a la tiranía. El movimiento feminista dominicano (representado por la Acción Feminista Dominicana, AFD) se vio cooptado y absorbido por el aparato ideológico trujillista. En el contexto de las reformas para otorgar derechos civiles y políticos, la AFD abandonó su discurso feminista original por una propaganda pro-Trujillo para obtener el auspicio del Estado. Esa distorsión de los objetivos iniciales del grupo les restó paulatinamente autonomía, hasta convertirlas en meras voceras del régimen.This article studies the process of feminine suffrage during the dictatorial regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1930-1961) in the Dominican Republic. During the years of the Second World War and the Cold War, as part of the dictator’s reelection campaigns, Dominican women’s political rights became a propaganda tool that offered the regime a false veneer of democracy. The Dominican feminist movement (under the banner of Acción Feminista Dominicana, AFD) was coopted and absorbed into the trujillista ideological machine. In the context of reforms granting civil and political rights for women, the AFD exchanged its original feminist discourse for pro-Trujillo propaganda in order to obtain State support.
