The article analyzes the relationship between protest and the emergence of the extreme right in Brazil and Argentina. The cases of Jair Bolsonaro and Javier Milei provide comparative data for identifying similarities and differences around the protest demands and its relationship with the political regime. Based on the methodology of protest event analysis and on theories on the dynamics and mechanisms connecting protest, democratic crisis, and representation, we found important differences between the two countries as well as similar elements. While in Brazil there were processes of crisis and institutional rupture permeated by the rise of nationalist and new right groups that later turned to an extreme right, in Argentina there were elements of institutional continuity where the protest contributed to constructing the motos which the extreme right would later take up. On the other hand, among the similar elements we find that in both countries protest contributed to the reconstruction of certain political narratives, endorsing discourses that were not previously accepted in public discussion.105-129esopenAccessProtesta socialDerechaDemocraciaBrasilArgentinaEl rol de la protesta en el surgimiento de la extrema derecha en Brasil y ArgentinaarticuloAutores y UNR EditoraAttribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International You are free to: Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
