The purpose of this paper is not to analyse the European Union (EU) and Latin America (LA) bi-regional relationship in their entirety, but rather to offer a brief account of the state of the relations between the EU and Latin America from its origins to present days, in order to consider its future prospects. This paper also includes a tight assessment of the last bi-regional events such as the 2009 Communication from the Commission on the EU-LA partnership and the 2010 EU-LA Summit in Madrid. This paper is a contribution to designing future scenarios for the bi-regional relationship, taking into account the Lisbon Treaty and its reforms on the EU foreign policy
