The monograph is a key genre for undergraduate humanities degrees as it introduces students into research writing, but it shows multiple discursive features –some of them disciplinary-bound– which have not been studied in depth yet. The monograph’ interpersonal meanings, as options of the system of APPRAISAL, may shed some light on this line of inquiry. Therefore I aim to describe some of the most common strategies and resources of the subsystem of GRADUATION that can be found in the monograph. I analyze qualitatively the introduction of 15 successful monographs from Letters, History and Philosophy degrees of the University of Buenos Aires. Results suggest that the monograph strategically uses a variety of GRADUATION options: student writers reduce their responsibility for the research, whereas frameworks, topics and hypotheses are boosted and intensified. Interdisciplinarily, Letters’ monographs tend to validate research projects, Philosophy’ monographs give importance to subjects, and History’ monographs emphasize sociohistorical processes. These findings are consistent with previous studies and present a hybrid picture of the monograph as a student genre for expert research.
