This article analyses the incorporation of the tram and the bus in South American cities and its role in providing the possibility of collective journeys, understood as a sensebuilding space that becomes fundamental for the metropolitan culture. It seeks to focus on the collective journey not only as a displacement, but as a form of mobility of habits, customs and concerns, on vehicles that – although products of industrialization – are far from being identical or serial.
