The conception offered by Epictetus of that which I am in the most legitimate sense has raised a growing interest along the last two decades, in virtue of the fact that Epictetus seems to have distanced himself from the Platonic-Aristotelian conception of the self by pointing to proairesis, a faculty which is singular and in each case mine, as the core of personal identity. I shall propose, on the contrary, 1) that such interpretation is built on a decontextualized reading of certain key passages of Epictetus’ Discourses, and that 2) an adequate and systematic reading of the problem of proairesis produces a result altogether opposite to the one proposed by that line of interpretation.
