Los cronistas jesuitas presentaron al público lector europeo una importante colección de textos en los cuales, entre otros temas, se describía a la naturaleza americana. Los padres jesuitas utilizaron como herramientas epistemológicas en las narraciones sobre América y su naturaleza, por un lado, la experiencia personal de viajeros que fueron testigos oculares de lo que narraron y por otro, el conocimiento de las lenguas nativas. Esta combinación fue lo que los habilitó como testigos fieles. También debe tenerse en cuenta que un criterio de validación importante fue su pertenencia a la Orden y sus servicios a las coronas católicas. La Ilustración generó nuevas herramientas conceptuales para el soporte epistemológico y cuestionó severamente los dispositivos humanistas utilizados por los autores jesuitas.
The Jesuit chronicles introduced to Europe an important collection of texts in which, between other topics, the American nature was describe. The Jesuit parents used epistemological tools on their narrations about America and it nature, in one hand, the travelers' personal experience who were eyewitnesses of the things narrated and on the other hand the knowledge of the native languages. These combinations enable them to be accurate witnesses. Also there must be born in mind that a very important validation criterion was their belonging to the Order and their services to the catholic crowns. The Enlightenment generated new conceptual tools for the epistemological support and questioned severely the humanist mechanism used by the Jesuit authors
